State Senator Creigh Deeds was released Friday from the University of Virginia Medical Center, three days after his son Gus stabbed him multiple times outside their Bath County home on Tuesday. Gus Deeds then fatally shot himself with a rifle.
On Twitter, Creigh Deeds said "I am alive so must live. Some wounds won't heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me."
Governor Bob McDonnell has ordered the state Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Bill Hazel, to take a closer look at Tuesday’s incident.

Gus Deeds had been evaluated by
mental health officials Monday in Bath County after an emergency custody order
was issued but was released when mental health officials were unable to find
a psychiatric bed for him.
In addition to the investigation by
the Secretary of Health and Human Resources, the inspector general for behavioral
health and developmental services is also investigating.
