Cracking Down on Drunken Driving

The Virginia State Police plan to be out in force to crack down on drunken driving during the holidays.
Col. W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent, says the Virginia State Police will be participating in sobriety checkpoints and roving enforcement patrols as part of the DUI enforcement campaign, Checkpoint Strikeforce.
Last year, 245 people died and 5,465 were injured in alcohol-related crashes in Virginia. Seven were killed during the three-day Christmas holiday, according to the Virginia Highway Safety Office.

The Virginia State Police encourage those attending holiday parties to:
Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, call a friend or family member, get a cab or use public transportation;n
If you know someone has been drinking, don’t let them drive. Arrange for a safe way home.
If you think you see an impaired driver on then road, call police. Dial #77 on your mobile phone to reach the nearest Virginia State Police Communications Center.
