AAA projects that over 1.2 million Virginians will travel 50
miles or more from home for the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Wednesday,
Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25, almost the same as last year’s holiday.
Despite gas prices that set calendar day records almost
every day since August, road trips continue to make up the bulk of Thanksgiving
travel. Over 1.1 million, or 91 percent of holiday travelers, will hit the
roads next week. While gas prices are still high, they have now dropped lower
in Virginia than last year at this time when they were the most expensive
average ever on Thanksgiving. Gas prices in Virginia today average $3.25,
or four cents lower than this day last year. AAA estimates the national average
price of gasoline will drop to between $3.25-3.40 a gallon in time for next
week’s holiday. Virginia’s prices are generally among the 10 lowest in the
nation and are already in that range, thus prices in the Commonwealth should
come in even lower.
