Fairfield Elementary School had to be evacuated on Thursday after school officials discovered smoke in the building.
Smoke in the hallways was discovered just after 3 o’clock, after classes had finished for the day.
Rockbridge County school officials say a heating-ventilation-air
conditioning unit malfunctioned causing smoke to enter the building.
The building was examined room by room until the
malfunctioning HVAC unit was located.
Maintenance crews from Rockbridge County Public Schools
disabled it until it can be repaired.
Both the Fire Department and the school division
maintenance crews determined the building to be safe.
Classes will be held on a normal schedule Friday.
