Changes Needed in Mental Health System

State Senator Creigh Deeds, recovering from stab wounds that he suffered last week, says changes are needed in the state’s mental health system.
Reportedly s Deeds has been critical of the Rockbridge Area Community Services Board after last Tuesday’s incident, when Deeds’ son, Gus Deeds, stabbed his father and then killed himself after Gus Deeds had been released from an emergency custody order.
The Rockbridge Area Community Services Board released Gus Deeds because the CSB was unable to find a bed in a psychiatric facility for Gus Deeds, although several hospitals in the region claimed that they had beds available but were never contacted.
Investigations of the situation are being carried out by the Office of the State Inspector General, the Health and Human Resources Secretary Bill Hazel and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
