Suspicious Item at VMI Detonated, Not a Bomb

A suspicious item that was discovered Wednesday morning near the entrance to VMI’s Preston Library was successfully detonated by the Virginia State Police. Following the controlled explosion on the VMI Parade Ground, there was no larger explosion, indicating it was not a bomb. The VMI Post was then given the all clear sign.
No word yet on what the suspicious item might have been. Authorities continue to investigate.
VMI spokesman Stewart MacInnis said the discovery of the suspicious item resulted in a temporary evacuation of several buildings, including Preston Library, the Nichols Engineering Building, and part of Mallory Hall.
