Holiday Safety Tips

Officials with the Virginia State Police Crime Prevention Program advise citizens to use caution when shopping and driving during the holiday season.
They say when shopping, park your car in well-lit areas and don’t overburden yourself with packages. Before leaving a store, have your keys in hand for easy and immediate access to your vehicle. You should also avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash. Be extra careful if carrying a wallet or purse and remain alert at all times to your surroundings. Avoid talking on a cell phone while walking to your vehicle in a parking lot.
When driving during the holidays, the Virginia State Police recommend that you avoid distractions by putting down your cell phone and paying close attention to traffic. They also advise motorists to prepare your vehicle for winter weather, especially if traveling for the holidays. Check tires, fluids, windshield wipers, and head/taillights to make sure they are all in good, working condition. You should always buckle up your seat belt, avoid driving fatigued, and never drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.
