Democrat Tim Kaine will be Virginia's next U.S. senator, as Kaine defeated Republican George Allen by approximately 170,000 votes.
In Congressional races, all 11 incumbent
Virginia congressmen were easily reelected. In the 6th District,
Republican Bob Goodlatte defeated Democrat Andy Schmookler. In the 5th District, Republican
Robert Hurt defeated Democrat John Douglass and independent Kenneth
Hildrebrandt.
In local races, in Lexington, Mimi Elrod was
re-elected Mayor and Frank Friedman, Marylin Alexander and Camille Wright
Miller won seats on City Council.
In the race for seats on Glasgow Town Council, the
top three vote getters were Michael Lewis Turner, Sonny Williams and Roger
Funkhouser.
Winning seats on Bedford City Council were Skip
Tharp, Bob Wandrei, Steve Rush and Stacey Hailey.
In Buena Vista, Edward Matheny and Roy Mohler won seats on the Buena Vista School Board.
In Altavista, Michael Mattox won the race for mayor
while the top vote getter in the race for Altavista Town Council was Beverley
Dalton and Champ Nowlin had the most votes in the race for Brookneal Town
Council.
In the race for the Bedford County School Board
District 2 seat, Jason Johnson was the winner, while John Hicks won the District
3 seat.
Mary Bess Smith was the top vote getter for Fincastle
Town Council and Christopher Boothe had the most votes in the race for
Troutville Town Council.
The top three for Amherst Town Council were Kenneth
Watts, Kenneth Ray Bumgarner and Rachel Elkins Thompson.
Jeff Irvine was the top vote getter for Clifton
Forge Town Council.
Voters on Tuesday also approved an amendment to the Virginia Constitution,
limiting the ability of government to take private property through eminent domain.
Another amendment allowing legislators to delay a one-day reconvened
legislative session also passed.
