Sandy Update
Hurricane Sandy caused a lot of wind, rain, flooding and snow in Virginia, but state officials say it could have been much worse.
Northern Virginia continued to suffer thousands of power blackouts Tuesday, but that area also avoided the brunt of the storm. Along the coast, Sandy caused moderate to severe flooding.
Governor Bob McDonnell says overall, Virginia suffered relatively minimal damage. McDonnell gave high marks to President Barack Obama's administration for quickly issuing a disaster declaration that will allow the federal government to provide direct assistance to the state.
In Southwest Virginia, snowfall totals included 14½ inches in Tazewell County and 7 inches in Giles County. Parts of Rockbridge County got a few inches of snow.
More than 30,000 homes and businesses in western Virginia had lost electricity by Tuesday afternoon, according to Appalachian Power.
