Lexington Council acts on Flag issue

Lexington City Council on Thursday approved a new flag ordinance that limits the use of flags flying on poles in the downtown area and on the Veterans' Memorial Bridge to U. S., Virginia, and city flags.
Council voted 4-1 in favor of the new ordinance after a public hearing that lasted nearly three hours Thursday night. Nearly all of the speakers from Lexington supported the new flag ordinance at Thursday’s public hearing.
The ordinance does not prohibit people from carrying the Confederate or other flags in parades or displaying those flags from private property. However, it essentially bans the display of Confederate flags and the flags of VMI and Washington and Lee from flying on the city poles and along the Veterans Memorial Bridge.
