Earthquake registers 5.9

Area citizens felt the impact Tuesday afternoon shortly before 2 p. m. of a 5.9 earthquake hitting the region.

The epicenter of the quake appeared to be in Louisa County, about 40 miles northwest of Richmond, not far from Dominion Virginia Power's North Anna nuclear plant.

No reports of any damage in this part of Virginia, although there were reports of property damage in other parts of the state, including the Richmond area.

Previously, the largest earthquake in Virginia's history occurred in 1897, a 5.9 earthquake in Giles County.
