Some 1,200 Civil War re-enactors are
expected to take part in the 149th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of
New Market Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19.
Historical interpreters will
demonstrate Union and Confederate military tactics and camp activities and civilian
life during the Civil War. The presentations will occur throughout the day
Saturday on the battlefield and around the Bushong Farm.
From 9:30 a.m. to noon, the park
will offer its first Adventure Camp for children age 7-12. Participants will be
invited to explore the Battle of New Market from the perspective of soldiers,
civilians, or VMI cadets, learning basic drill maneuvers, eating authentic
period food, and playing 19th-century games with prizes.
At 1 p.m., the National Park Service
will present “Avenue of Invasion: The Shenandoah Valley in 1863.” The
program will be followed by a commemorative re-enactment of the Second Battle
of Winchester at 2 p.m.
Activities will continue on Sunday
with a Civil War-period church service and living history programs, culminating
in the Battle of New Market re-enactment at 1:30 p.m.
