The contract has been signed between
the Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfield-Echols of Fishersville
to build the new East Nelson Street Bridge in Lexington.
Nelson Street will be closed to
through traffic starting Tuesday, February 5, around 9 a.m.
On the western side of the bridge,
barricades will be placed on East Nelson St. at the approximate location of the
end of the existing bridge. On the eastern side of the bridge, barricades will
be placed to the west of Davidson Street which will stay open during
construction. Varner Lane will be closed from Short Street to a point just
beyond the northern side of the existing bridge.
The new bridge is scheduled for
completion mid-December 2013.
Lexington officials say they encourage
everyone to continue to come downtown for shopping, dining, and
enjoyment. Parking is available and the detour around the bridge work
should cause only minor inconveniences.
