Winter Storm Update

Winter's first major storm caused hundreds of accidents, left thousands without power, and dumped up to 9 inches of snow across Western and Central Virginia on Sunday.

Moderate to minor conditions still exist on many roads. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is necessary. Virginia Department of Transportation crews worked through the night to plow and treat roads and will continue these operations as long as conditions exist. On I-64, I-81 and primary roads, minor conditions are reported in Rockbridge County and moderate conditions in Augusta County.

Statewide, one of the more troublesome spots was the stretch of Interstate 81 between Wytheville and Rural Retreat. In that stretch alone, VDOT and State Police responded on Sunday to multiple tractor trailer crashes. One of the crashes involved a tractor trailer jackknifing about a mile south of the Wytheville Route 11 exit (Exit 67), on I-81 northbound around 4:30 p.m.. The crash caused a 13 mile back-up, and closed I-81 northbound for more than five hours Sunday afternoon and evening.
