The Sons of Confederate Veterans has filed a lawsuit against the
city of Lexington in an effort to overturn the
city ordinance that prohibits the flying of the Confederate flag on city-owned
flagpoles in Lexington.
Under the ordinance approved by Lexington City Council last
September, only city, state and U.S.
flags can be flown on city’s flagpoles.
The SCV lawsuit, filed in federal court in Roanoke, claims the city ordinance violates a
1993 court order for the display of the Confederate flag.
The suit seeks damages and seeks to have Lexington officials placed in civil contempt.
