Voters on Tuesday elected a new Virginia governor, as Democrat Terry McAuliffe edged Republican Ken Cuccinelli by approximately 56,000 votes.
Democrat Ralph Northam defeated Republican E. W. Jackson to
win the race for Lieutenant Governor by a margin of roughly 55-45 percent.
In the Attorney General’s race, the latest count from the state Board of Elections had Republican Mark Obenshain ahead of Democrat Mark Herring by approximately 219 votes. The race appears headed for a
recount. In Virginia elections, if the margin of
victory is less than 1 percent, the candidate that appears to have lost may
request a recount within 10 days of the State Board of Elections certifying the
result.
Elsewhere on Tuesday,
Republican Delegate Scott Garrett in Lynchburg was easily re-elected as Garrett
defeated Libertarian Jonathan Parrish 75-22 percent.
In Rockbridge County, Rusty
Ford won the race for the Board of Supervisors seat from Kerrs Creek while
Buster Lewis was re-elected as supervisor from Walkers Creek. Kevin Brooks and
Laurie Strong won seats on the Rockbridge County School Board.
In Glasgow, Ruby Clark won
the mayor’s race while Jeremy Kilgore, Andrea Bradley and John Hill won seats
on Glasgow Town Council.
John Marks was the winner of
the race in Amherst County for the District 5 seat on the Board of Supervisors.
In Campbell County, J. D.
Puckett, Eric Zehr and Mike Rousseau all won seats on the Board of Supervisors
while Scott Miller won a seat on the Campbell County School Board.
Lynchburg Sheriff Ron Gillispie was also re-elected on Tuesday, receiving 78
percent of the vote in defeating Kevin Chapman.
